Some of the customers using the Sun FireTM V480 server and Sun FireTM V440 server include Texas Instruments and Motorola Ireland, iForceSM Partners BEA and Kasenna, and the University Hospitals Health Systems (UHHS). A charity organization in the UK used Sun servers and other Sun hardware for a fundraising event that generated over $5 million (USD) during a five-hour period when the event was broadcast by the BBC.
Kathy Pries, group marketing manager, Volume Systems Products at Sun, said, "Our low-cost and leading price-performance Sun Fire V440 and V480 servers offer proven reliability, proven scalability, and deliver a proven, leading revenue stream for Sun. With the increased demand for four-way systems that have faster speed, better performance and greater throughput, more customers choosing Sun systems for their IT solutions are expected."
"BEA Systems considers the Sun Fire V440 server a leading hardware platform to run BEA WebLogic Platform 8.1. The Sun Fire V440 server can offer customers proven reliability, competitive pricing and the ability to expand, which can make the Sun Fire V440 server a great value for WebLogic Platform customers," said Erik Frieberg, senior director of product marketing, BEA Systems.
"Sun is a key development platform for Kasenna and having advanced access to test new products is an exciting opportunity for us to benchmark new product performance sooner. Our carrier-grade customers are always looking for the highest performance products on the market for their advanced TV services deployments," said Mark Gray, CEO, Kasenna.
The Sun Fire V480 server, previously offered with 1.05 GHz UltraSPARCR III Cu processors, now features faster 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC III Cu processors and the SolarisTM Operating System (Solaris OS). The Sun Fire V480 server has a large cache size, bus speed and memory capacity. UHHS chose the Sun Fire V480 server with mission-critical Oracle E-Business Suite 11i applications for one of the largest ERP systems to be found in the healthcare industry.
The Sun Fire V440 server features UltraSPARC IIIi processors for 64-bit computing. It is the lowest priced, four-way, rack-optimized server in its class.
The UK charity, Comic Relief, holds a yearly fundraiser called Red Nose Day. Sun provided hardware and technical support for the Web site infrastructure which received almost one million visitors during the five-week campaign period. The Web infrastructure used two Sun Fire V480 servers that helped support all the email and application services; Sun StorEdgeTM 3910 and Sun StorEdgeTM 9900 arrays that helped support the database functionality, high availability and continuity planning; the SolarisTM 9 Operating System and SunTM Cluster 3 software; and a three node all-active Oracle9i Database with Real Application Clusters hosted on three Sun FireTM V880 servers.
"Without the powerful Sun Fire server infrastructure, we would not have been able to handle over 100,000 transactions in such a short period," said Martin Gill, new media fundraising manager at Comic Relief. "Sun Microsystems helped the overall success of the fundraising campaign due to the reliability and scalability of their products. As a key partner alongside Cisco, Energis and Oracle, Sun Microsystems helped enable us to make the Net work, so we could concentrate on the job of raising money."
